The basic components of any car are the engine, fuel system, ignition system, battery, charging system, starting system, cooling system, transmission system, steering system, and timing belt. Modern cars usually have an on-board diagnosis, emission system, electrical system, and instrument panel.

The engine of a car generates power by burning gasoline. It is supplied by a fuel system, including a fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injection system, and carburetor, which mix air and fuel together. The ignition system provides the spark to ignite this fuel-air mixture. It consists of the spark plug, ignition wire, coil, and distributor, which control the time and current of the engine cylinder. The battery powers other systems of the car and is charged by the engine. The charging system consists of a regulator and an alternator. The battery is also a part of the starting system, including the ignition switch, starter, and neutral safety switch.

Since the engine will generate extremely high heat when running, it also needs a cooling system. It consists of a radiator, water pump, thermostat, and hose for circulating liquid coolant. Transmission power is transmitted from the engine to the wheels. The electrical system controls other systems of the car, including instrument panels and warning lights, alerting drivers of potential problems, as well as entertainment equipment and air conditioning.
